Do you love soft, squishy rugs? Add a fluffy, charming accent to any room with this DIY pom pom rug that’s incredibly easy to make.
How to make a pom pom

I’m not usually a rug person—most of my floors are bare because they’re easier to clean. But when my daughter asked for a rug for her floor play, I made this adorable, easy DIY pom pom rug. It’s soft, fluffy, and perfect for a bedroom, nursery, or even a bathroom.

If you’ve already made pom poms in bulk, you know how quick and satisfying the process is. I made many pom poms ahead of time for this rug—super easy and fun. This project is a great family activity for a long summer day and adds a bright pop of color to minimalist spaces. Expect to spend about three hours making the rug, including pom pom creation. The final fluffiness depends on how large and dense you make each pom pom—the thicker they are, the fluffier the rug.

Materials:
- Wool yarn in various colors and thicknesses
- A chair (optional, useful when winding yarn)
- Scissors
- Non-slip rug mat in the size you want your rug to be (you can trim it later)
- Clothesline
- Clothes pins
Directions:
- Make pom poms in bulk using your preferred method, leaving the tying strings about 3 inches long.
- Hang the non-slip mat on a clothesline with clothespins so you can work comfortably and access both sides if needed.
- Plan your layout and start placing pom poms on the mat. Pack them tightly so there are no gaps. If you want a dense look, you’ll need to make extra pom poms. For reference, I used about 180 small pom poms for an 18″–20″ rug.
- Tie each pom pom to the mat using its strings. For extra security, tie every two adjacent pom poms together so they hold each other in place. Avoid tying so tightly that you risk tearing the mat.
- If you want a more durable rug, use a double layer of non-slip mat, but be aware this makes tying a bit harder and slower.
- Once all pom poms are secured, trim any excess mat around the edges to shape the rug.
- Fluff and trim the pom poms if needed to achieve an even surface. Your DIY pom pom rug is complete—enjoy!
