Is it even Puerto Rican if your mom didn’t make Crema de Farina for breakfast at least once a week? This traditional Puerto Rican milled wheat porridge is subtly sweet, luxuriously creamy, and perfect when finished with fresh fruit and a dusting of cinnamon. It’s a quick, comforting breakfast that comes together in minutes.
Like harina de maiz, crema de farina is a childhood staple across Puerto Rico. It’s made with just a few pantry ingredients—milled wheat (farina), milk or water, a touch of cinnamon, and your preferred sweetener—so it’s perfect for busy mornings.
The porridge cooks in under 15 minutes and can be served plain or dressed up with any toppings you like for a more substantial bowl.

How to Make Farina

Toppings, Toppings, Toppings!

My mom confessed she hated farina as a child because she ate it so often. To make it exciting for me, she topped it with everything from fresh fruit to nuts and seeds.
Treat farina like a yogurt bowl or smoothie bowl: add sliced banana, berries, nuts, seeds, or even savory toppings like eggs and bacon. My favorite is fresh berries, a pat of butter, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Scale
- 2 1/2 cups milk or water
- 1/2 cup farina
- 1/4 cup honey or sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Combine farina with milk, sweetener, salt, and cinnamon: Whisk the farina with the milk (or water), honey or sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a small pot over medium heat. Keep whisking until the mixture starts to thicken and becomes smooth.
- Whisk in butter & serve: Reduce heat to low and whisk in the butter until it melts and blends into the porridge. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Serve hot with a pat of butter, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and fresh fruit or other toppings of your choice.
Notes
*If the farina thickens too much, whisk in a little extra warm milk or water to reach your desired consistency while still hot.
