One of my favorite things about living in Maine is the abundance of roadside stands and charming small businesses that thrive here.
It might be someone selling lobsters right off their dock, slices of cheesecake out of a garage, handmade mittens on a front porch table, fig-filled pastries at the end of a driveway, or fresh baked goods sold from a shed beside a home.
For some reason, this wonderfully informal economy works especially well in Maine.
Most of these places operate quietly, relying on word of mouth rather than heavy advertising. Often the only sign is a small hand-painted board by the road.
And I LOVE it.
A few Saturdays ago, The Duck Lady and I went to check out Rose Cottage Bakery in Camden, Maine.
Rose Cottage Bakery is tucked into a residential neighborhood a few streets from downtown Camden. Owner Megan Murphy offers a rotating selection of seasonal sweet treats that draw a steady Saturday morning line of locals and visitors.
Standing in line, not knowing what would still be available when we reached the counter, was part of the excitement. A neighbor boy entertained the crowd by juggling as people waited for their pastries.
Cinnamon rolls, cake slices, cookies, brownies, dinner rolls and scones were all on offer, with even more tucked away inside the house and kitchen.
Everything happened so quickly that by the time we paid and stepped out the side door I wasn’t entirely sure what we’d purchased.

When we opened our box outside, it felt like a little dream come true. I love discovering new places, especially when pastries are involved.
Picnic tables are a Maine tradition, and I told The Duck Lady she should set up a “coffee stand” at her place so customers buying flowers, vegetables, and baked goods could linger just like the patrons at Rose Cottage Bakery. I’m always full of suggestions.
Maine really feels like the way life should be.
