Homemade McDonald’s Mint Shamrock Shake Recipe

Does the month of March hold special meaning for you or your family? For ours, March is full of birthdays and the annual return of the beloved Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s.

When March arrives, we scan every McDonald’s sign for the “Shamrock Shake is Back” notice. We can’t get enough of that minty, creamy flavor. Because the official shake is typically available only briefly each year, we started making our own at home so we can enjoy it any time.

This copycat Shamrock Shake is quick and simple to make and delivers the same refreshing mint-and-vanilla taste. You’ll need vanilla ice cream, whole milk, peppermint extract, green food coloring, and optional whipped cream and a cherry for garnish. The last two aren’t required, but they do make the shake more festive.

Place the ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, and a few drops of green food coloring into a blender.

Blend until the mixture is smooth and well combined.

Pour into glasses and top with whipped cream, a cherry, sprinkles, and a fun straw if you like. These extras are optional, but they make the shake more enjoyable and festive.

This recipe yields about three medium shakes or four small ones.
