How to make Homemade Apple Crumble
The recipe comes together in four straightforward steps:
- Prepare the apple filling
- Make the crumble topping
- Assemble the crumble in a baking tray
- Bake until golden and bubbly
1. Prepare the apple filling
In a bowl combine the peeled and diced apples with lemon juice, sugar, salt, cinnamon and corn flour. Mix thoroughly so the apples are evenly coated and the corn flour will help thicken the juices. Set the filling aside.

2. Prepare the crumble topping
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar and salt. Add the softened butter and vanilla extract.

Use your hands, a fork or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse, wet sand with small and larger crumbs. The texture should be airy — not smooth — to ensure a crisp topping after baking.
3. Assemble the apple crumble
Pour the prepared apple filling (including any juices) into a baking dish or tray, spreading it into an even layer. Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples so there are gaps for steam to escape and the topping can crisp up.

Your apple crumble is ready for the oven.
4. Bake the apple crumble
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F). Bake the crumble for 40–45 minutes, or until the apple juices are bubbling around the edges and the topping is a medium golden color and feels firm to the touch.

After baking, let the dish rest for about five minutes to cool slightly and set. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or custard.
Custard cream to serve with apple crumble
Ingredients for custard cream
- Milk: 250 ml
- Cream: 250 ml
- Vanilla extract: 1 tsp
- Egg yolks: 4
- Sugar: 25 g (about 2 1/2 tbsp)
- Corn flour: 3 g (1 tsp)
- Warm the milk and cream together in a saucepan until steaming but not boiling.
- Whisk the egg yolks with sugar and corn flour until pale.
- Slowly whisk in a ladle of warm milk at a time into the egg mixture to temper it.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook gently over low heat, whisking continuously until thickened (about 8–10 minutes). Remove from heat and cool slightly before serving.
Note
If the eggs begin to scramble, remove the pan from heat, pour the custard into a bowl to cool, then strain through a fine sieve to remove any lumps.
