What Makes This Recipe So Good

  • The air fryer excels at cooking Italian sausage. It locks in juices while creating a crisp outer casing, and the sausages are ready in under 15 minutes — perfect when you need a fast, satisfying meal.
  • Easier and cleaner than stovetop cooking. Grease stays contained in the air fryer, so there’s less splatter to clean up. You also don’t need to constantly flip the sausages to evenly brown them — the circulated hot air delivers even results.
  • Serve these sausages with pasta, sautéed vegetables, roasted potatoes, or in a bun with your favorite toppings. Leftovers refrigerate well. Slice them and add to scrambled eggs with peppers and onions for a simple, tasty breakfast the next day.

Chef’s Tips

  • All air fryers cook a bit differently, so total cook times can vary. Our sausages were ready after 13 minutes, but yours may finish sooner or take a few minutes longer.
  • Always check doneness by internal temperature rather than time alone. Remove sausages from the air fryer at 158°F (70°C) and let them rest for a few minutes; residual heat will bring them to the safe serving temperature of 160°F (71°C) while preserving juiciness.
  • Sausage drippings can sometimes cause smoke. To reduce smoking, place a small amount of water beneath the basket, or use a slice of bread in that spot. If you have air fryer-safe parchment, lining the basket can also help catch drips.

5 Italian sausages

Ingredients

  • 5
    Italian sausage links
    any brand

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Tongs
  • Internal meat thermometer

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 370°F (188°C).
  • When preheated, remove the basket. Place 5 Italian sausage links in the basket in a single layer. Work in batches if needed so sausages aren’t overcrowded; leave space for air to circulate.

  • Return the basket to the air fryer and air fry for 6 minutes.
  • Remove the basket, turn the sausages with tongs, and air fry 4 minutes more.
  • After that, check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer. Continue air frying, checking every 1–2 minutes, until the sausages reach 158°F (70°C) internally.
  • When they reach 158°F, transfer sausages to a plate and let rest 3–5 minutes before serving so residual heat brings them to about 160°F and juices redistribute.

Notes

  • Cook Time: Our sausages finished after 13 minutes total, but every air fryer is different. Use an instant-read thermometer to confirm doneness rather than relying solely on time or appearance.
  • Leftovers: Store leftover cooked sausages in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently to preserve texture and flavor.
