Homemade Coffee Creamer Recipe with Dairy-Free Option

Homemade Coffee Creamer

Warm, delicious coffee is the ritual that gets me moving every morning. I love the routine of brewing a fresh cup and savoring that first sip — it signals the start of the day and helps me focus. Sometimes I even have a small afternoon top-up for an added boost.

My husband didn’t drink coffee before we had our daughter, but now he drinks it regularly. At first it helped him cope with nighttime wakeups, and later it simply became a habit. Whatever the reason, we both enjoy a good cup, and research suggests coffee has health benefits when enjoyed in moderation.

Homemade Coffee Creamer

Here’s our favorite homemade coffee creamer, with a dairy-free option. It’s lightly sweetened with honey — optional if you prefer it unsweetened — and flavored with vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. If you tolerate dairy, you can substitute cream or half-and-half for the coconut milk.

We avoid dairy for health reasons in our home: my husband has Ulcerative Colitis, and dairy affects my skin and joints. When we slip up, it’s noticeable, so a dairy-free creamer works well for us.

Ingredients

  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 3 tbs honey (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, gently warm the coconut milk and honey, whisking until combined. Do not boil — just heat until the honey dissolves and the mixture is warm.
  2. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon.
  3. Pour the creamer into your coffee and enjoy.
  4. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to one week. Shake well before each use to recombine any separated fat.

Notes

If using canned coconut milk, separation and chunky fat are normal when chilled. Shake the container before using — the small morsels will melt into hot coffee and add richness.
