The other day while I was out running errands—and sharing moments on Instagram and Twitter—I mentioned my secret weapon for fighting dry skin. Several people asked what it was, so I decided to share it here. It’s simple, effective, and something I’ve used for years.

Winter is the season most associated with dry skin, but heat, sun exposure, and indoor air conditioning can dry out your skin year-round. I notice my feet get particularly dry in summer when I wear sandals a lot. Over time I found a routine that keeps my skin soft without feeling greasy, and it’s far more affordable than many specialty products.
How to Moisturize Dry Skin
- Use warm—not hot—water for showers or baths. Hot water strips natural oils and can worsen dryness.
- While your skin is still damp, apply a nickel-sized amount of Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel (the gel formula is thicker than the regular baby oil). Massage it into your skin—add more where needed, but avoid overdoing it.
- Towel dry by patting gently rather than rubbing to preserve moisture.
- Immediately after drying, apply Johnson’s Baby Creamy Oil all over to lock in hydration.
Doing this on damp skin is the key: it traps moisture against the skin and keeps it soft and smooth without a greasy feel. For stubborn areas such as heels or elbows, you can repeat the gel step or use a slightly larger amount.
The real key is applying products to damp skin to lock in moisture.
